New Swimming Pool Owner Guide

CONGRATULATIONS ON BECOMING A SWIMMING POOL OWNER!

Here are some useful tips to keep your pool problem free all season long.

There are 4 main areas when looking after your pool that will ensure the longevity of your pool equipment and provide a safe clean pool for you and your family.

1.) CLEANING - Vacuuming, skimming, brushing and emptying skimmer basket(s). If this is done once a week (or as needed)

your pool will always look its best. It also helps to keep algae away.

2.) EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE - This should be done at least once a week. Equipment maintenance consists of cleaning out the pump basket(s), backwashing and rinsing the sand filter(cartridge filters don’t apply) and refilling the chlorinator. If

using other sanitizers, this is a good time to ensure those systems are functioning properly (e.g. salt pools have proper salt levels etc).

3.) TEST AND BALANCING THE POOL WATER - Far too often this is only done when problems arise. Poor water chemistry is the

number one cause of pool equipment failure. Warranties on pool equipment will be void if manufacturers determine failure was due to water chemistry issues. Balanced pool water will ensure a safe and clear pool to enjoy and will maximize and extend the life of your pool equipment.

WEEKLY - Test the water in your swimming pool and make adjustments as needed. A test kit that is able to test for Chlorine, Ph and Total Alkalinity is recommended. Make sure your test kit has not expired.

MONTHLY - Have your water tested by your local pool dealer which has a complete water analysis program that can test for other parameters that most home test kits do not have. Each test will be documented and stored on the data base which will ensure the results are available if there is an issue with any of the pool equipment. Manufacturers will need to rule out improper water chemistry before they approve any warranty work.

4.) WATER LEVEL - Maintaining the proper water level is essential in order for the pool equipment to function properly.

Evaporation, splash out and pool leaks will all lower the pool water. Visually inspect the pool water daily and add water when needed to the proper level (half way up the skimmer).

Please keep in mind that every pool is unique and different in it’s own way. There may be other maintenance items that need to be performed on your swimming pool which are not listed here, this is simply a guideline.
